How many steps are in a mile?
It depends on your stride. For an average 80 cm (31.5 in) stride, one mile is about 2,000 steps. A shorter 65 cm stride gives roughly 2,475 steps per mile, and a long 95 cm stride gives about 1,695. That is why this calculator asks for your height or stride instead of assuming a single number.
How far is 10,000 steps?
For an average adult stride of about 70-80 cm, 10,000 steps is roughly 7-8 km (4.3-5.0 miles). Enter your own height or measured stride above to get the figure that applies to you.
How do I measure my stride length?
Walk 10 normal steps in a straight line, measure the total distance from your starting point to the toe of your last step, and divide by 10. Doing it over 20 or 30 steps is even more accurate. Measure at your usual walking pace, not an exaggerated stride.
Why does the calculator estimate stride from my height?
Walking stride length correlates closely with height — roughly height x 0.415 for most adults. It is a solid starting point when you have not measured, but a measured stride is always more accurate, so you can override the estimate at any time.
Is stride length the same as step length?
Not always. In gait analysis, step length is the distance from one foot's heel strike to the other foot's heel strike, while stride length covers two steps (the same foot twice). This calculator uses step length — the distance you cover per step counted by a pedometer or phone — which is what fitness trackers report.
