FAQ

How long does it take to drive 100 miles?

At a highway average of 65 mph (105 km/h) it takes about 1 hour 32 minutes. At a suburban 50 mph average it is 2 hours, and in stop-start city traffic averaging 30 mph it stretches to well over 3 hours.

Why is my real drive slower than the speed limit suggests?

Average speed over a whole trip is always below the posted limit because of junctions, traffic lights, roadworks, merging, congestion and acceleration from a standstill. A good planning rule is to use a speed 10-15% under the limit for the road type you will spend most of the trip on.

What average speed should I use?

Use 48 km/h (30 mph) for city driving, 80 km/h (50 mph) for suburban and A-road driving, and 105 km/h (65 mph) for sustained motorway or interstate driving. Mixed routes fall between — set the field to whatever best matches the majority of your distance.

How much time should I add for stops?

Plan about 15 minutes for a fuel stop, 30-45 minutes for a meal, and a 15-minute rest break every two hours of driving for safety. Enter the total in the stops field and it is added to the driving time.

Does the calculator account for traffic?

Not automatically — it uses whatever average speed you enter. To model rush-hour traffic, lower the speed rather than adding stop time: congestion slows the whole leg instead of pausing it.
