Use Cases
Compare design scenarios
Quickly compare different demand intensities to see how changes in heating or cooling demand affect long-term energy use and emissions.
Example: Compare 15 vs. 25 kWh/m²/year heating demand over 30 years.
Estimate operational footprint
Get a rough estimate of a building's operational energy and carbon footprint for early planning or educational purposes.
Example: Estimate emissions for a 200 m² home over 50 years.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What does this calculator do?
- It projects total energy consumption and CO₂ emissions over a chosen time horizon based on your building's floor area and annual demand intensities for heating, cooling, and other uses. It multiplies each demand by floor area and the emissions factor, then sums them.
- What units should I use?
- Enter floor area in square meters (m²), annual demands in kWh/m²/year, emissions factor in kg CO₂e/kWh, and time horizon in years. The results will be in kWh and kg CO₂e.
- Is this a certification test?
- No. This is a scenario tool for estimating energy and emissions. It is not a Passive House certification test and does not account for all factors like airtightness, thermal bridges, or renewable generation.
Tips & Common Mistakes
Tips
- Use realistic demand intensities based on your climate and building design. Passive House targets are around 15 kWh/m²/year for heating, but your values may differ.
- Choose an emissions factor that reflects your local energy mix. Lower-carbon electricity will reduce the estimated CO₂e.
- Consider the time horizon carefully—longer periods show cumulative impacts but assume constant demands and factors.
- Use this tool to explore 'what-if' scenarios, not as a substitute for professional energy modeling.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Entering total annual energy instead of per-square-meter demand. The fields expect kWh/m²/year, not kWh/year.
- Using inconsistent units, such as square feet for floor area or BTU for energy, without converting to m² and kWh.
- Assuming the result is a certified Passive House performance metric—this calculator is for estimation only.
