How do you do long division step by step?
Bring down the leftmost digit of the dividend, ask how many whole times the divisor fits into it, write that digit above the bar, multiply it by the divisor and subtract. Whatever is left becomes the start of the next column when you bring down the next digit. Repeat until every digit has been used; whatever remains at the end is the remainder.
What is the quotient and what is the remainder?
The quotient is how many whole times the divisor fits into the dividend; the remainder is what is left over and is always smaller than the divisor. For 1234 divided by 12 the quotient is 102 and the remainder is 10, because 12 x 102 = 1224 and 1234 - 1224 = 10.
What happens when the divisor does not fit into a digit?
You write 0 as that quotient digit and bring the next digit down. Dropping that zero is the single most common long division mistake: 4020 divided by 4 is 1005, not 105. This calculator shows every zero digit explicitly in the tableau so you can see where it belongs.
Why is my quotient 0?
If the divisor is larger than the dividend, the divisor never fits a whole time, so the quotient is 0 and the remainder is the whole dividend. For example 825 divided by 900 gives quotient 0 remainder 825, which is 0.9166... as a decimal.
How does long division handle negative numbers?
This calculator uses truncated division: the quotient is rounded toward zero and the remainder takes the sign of the dividend. So -1234 divided by 12 is -102 remainder -10. That keeps the identity divisor x quotient + remainder = dividend true in every case. The written steps themselves always use the plain magnitudes, which is how long division is taught.
Why can't I divide by zero?
Division asks how many times the divisor fits into the dividend. Zero fits an unlimited number of times and still never reaches the dividend, so no answer exists — division by zero is undefined and the calculator reports an error instead of a number.
