What is a normal reaction time?

For a simple visual click test, most adults score between 200 and 300 milliseconds, with roughly 250 ms being typical. Under 200 ms is fast, and consistent scores under 180 ms are exceptional. A large part of that number is not your brain - it is display latency, input latency and the time your finger takes to travel.

Why does clicking early say "Too soon"?

Anticipating the green signal instead of reacting to it would produce impossibly low scores like 5 ms, which measure guessing rather than reaction. Any click registered before the go signal is rejected and that trial restarts, so every recorded score is a genuine reaction.

Why is the delay before green random?

The wait is randomised between 2 and 5 seconds precisely so you cannot learn the rhythm and time your click in advance. A fixed delay would let you pre-empt the signal after a couple of rounds.

Does my hardware affect the result?

Yes, considerably. A 60 Hz monitor adds up to about 17 ms of display latency versus a few milliseconds on a 144 Hz+ screen, and wireless mice, browser overhead and background load all add more. Compare your scores to yourself on the same setup rather than to other people on different hardware.

Can I take the test with the keyboard?

Yes. Tab to the test area and use the space bar (or Enter) to start each trial and to react. Keyboard and mouse latency differ slightly, so pick one input method and stick with it when comparing runs.
